Best Procedures For 40’s: Surgical And Non-surgical Choices
By the time people reach their 40’s, they are exerting control in many areas of life and are looking for ways to maintain or regain vitality. Whether disturbed by facial lines and wrinkles or feeling dragged down by sagging breasts and stubborn patches of fat, bring your concerns to Premier Plastic Surgery & Dermatology. We offer a variety of surgical and non-surgical options to reduce the signs of aging, allowing patients to match their appearance with their outlook on life.
WHAT ARE SURGICAL AND NON-SURGICAL CHOICES?
Premier Plastic Surgery & Dermatology has expertise in a wide variety of surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures. Some of the most popular surgical options to restore a youthful appearance include breast augmentation, liposuction, and facelift. Some patients desire less invasive, non-surgical treatments, such as Botox® injections which are offered at our Acqua Blu Medical Spa. With 6.7 million treatments performed in the U.S. in 2015, Botox® is commonly used by those over 40 as a tool to restore smooth facial skin. Regarding the surgical options, breast augmentation restores the size and fullness of the breast by inserting implants under the skin. Liposuction uses suction via small incisions to remove underlying patches of excess fat that are resistant to exercise and diet (Mayo Clinic). A facelift is a surgical procedure that trims excessive, drooping skin of the face and neck (Mayo Clinic). (American Board of Cosmetic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons)
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF SURGICAL AND NON-SURGICAL PROCEDURES?
The major benefit of cosmetic procedures is to diminish the visible signs of aging. Severe symptoms require more intense treatments. Surgical procedures have a much longer lasting effect compared to non-surgical procedures. Sagging skin of the face due to loss of volume can be tight again. In women, the loss of firmness in the breasts resulting from childbirth or weight loss can be restored. Other areas of the body that are unable to be altered with diet and exercise can be slimmed and toned. Your individual situation will determine which cosmetic surgical procedure benefits you. Some of the most popular procedures for those in their 40’s are as follows:
For the body: Liposuction smoothes body contours by reducing stubborn fat deposits of the abdomen, hips and thighs, providing patients with more proportional curves. (Mayo Clinic)
For the breast: Breast augmentation enhances a patient’s breasts by restoring the fullness or evenness of the breasts, also boosting self-confidence. (American Society of Plastic Surgeons, Mayo Clinic, U.S. National Library of Medicine).
For the face and skin: A facelift is a surgical means by which patients can enjoy a smoother neckline and firmer facial skin (Mayo Clinic).
Non-surgical option: For patients who are seeking a less invasive method of restoring a more youthful appearance, Botox® is the most popular option. Botox® injections smooth out wrinkles and lines in the face. The effect of the injections will fade over time. (American Academy of Dermatology, American Journal of Clinical Dermatology, U.S. National Library of Medicine)
HOW ARE SURGICAL AND NON-SURGICAL PROCEDURES PERFORMED?
All surgical procedures are performed at Premier Plastic Surgery & Dermatology in our Pittsburgh surgical center by our board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Brian V. Heil. The surgical procedures of breast augmentation, liposuction, and facelift are performed on an outpatient basis. After a monitored recovery period, our patients return to the comfort of their home to complete their recovery. Breast augmentation provides our patients with fuller breasts by inserting implants (filled with either saline or silicone) into the breasts either behind the breast tissue or under chest muscle (U.S. National Library of Medicine). Liposuction is performed by outlining the areas to be treated and using suction to physically remove the excess fat cells from the areas of concern, consequently changing the body’s shape (Mayo Clinic). With a facelift, the surgeon removes or repositions the excessive skin around the neckline or face creating a smoother appearance (Mayo Clinic). In a Botox® treatment, small amounts of botulinum toxin are injected into the target areas to temporarily relax the muscles eliminating lines and wrinkles (American Academy of Dermatology).
WHY ARE CERTAIN SURGICAL AND NON-SURGICAL CHOICES IDEAL FOR 40 YEAR OLDS?
For those aging into their 40’s, skin elasticity decreases, the fullness of facial features diminish, and body proportions change. While 40 year olds are experiencing more freedom in other aspects of their lives, it can be disconcerting to lose control of their appearance as the signs of aging become apparent. Surgical and non-surgical procedures target areas of concern. Breast augmentation is ideal for those in their 40’s, primarily to restore volume in breasts after women have completed childbearing and breastfeeding. When less time and energy is available to devote to diet and exercise, liposuction may become the choice for those who wish to restore the proportions of their youth. Aging facial features may be the first thing many notice, so restoring a younger image through a facelift is appealing. For those looking for a less intense method that slows the signs of aging, Botox® is the ideal treatment.
